Mediterrania Saidia – The flagship development of the “Plan Azur”

Since King Mohammed VI came to power, Morocco´s fortunes have been on the up and up. This forward thinking and stable government is actively encouraging development. In a bid to improve his country’s economy and create employment he has introduced a dynamic tourism initative called the “Plan Azur”.

This large scale plan is focussed on improving the countrys infrastructure with the construction of new motorways, railways, expanding the airports and providing first class tourist facilities. The aim of the plan is to attract 10 million visitors to Morocco by the year 2010 and is often referred to as the Kings “Vision 2010”.  More than £2.2 billion has been earmarked for the development of six upmarket coastal resorts. (Five on the Atlantic side and one on the Med).

These five star resorts will offer state-of-the-art facilities; ultra luxurious hotels,  professionally designed golf courses, superb sporting facilities, chic boutiques, upmarket beach clubs, sophisticated restaurants and bars, a 800 berth marina and luxury residential property.

The flagship development of the Plan Azur is Mediterrrania Saidia.

Set in over seven million square metres of land, it lies along 6km of beautiful sandy coastline, on the eastern-most corner of Morocco, next to the Algerian border. It is the only resort that lies on the Mediterranean Coast, thereby enjoying its warm waters, temperate climate, sandy beaches and boasting easy access from mainland Spain. It is also the largest of all the Plan Azur resorts and was the first to commence construction, some two years ago.

Many of the developments within Saidia are being constructed by well established international developers (hand picked by the King himself), high profile hotel groups such Barceló, Riu and Iberostar are due to open hotels and luxury retail brands are already eyeing up retail units around the Marina.

Combine that with a low cost of living, year round sunshine and increased accessibility thanks to the arrival of low cost carriers and clearly Morocco has the potential to become a world class holiday destination.
